We would like to welcome Andrew Suit, who is a lifelong resident of Fleming Co. and 1982 graduate of FCHS to our team. Andrew recently retired from Kentucky Fish & Wildlife as a Captain with the law enforcement division after 22 years of service. He and his wife Val have two daughters, Heyna and Audrey.

Andrew will be assisting the sheriffs office with various details and special projects within the Sheriff's office.

This past week, Sheriff Smith completed the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) Leadership Development Course at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. Along with 23 other sheriffs from across the United States, he explored various topics such as the role of the sheriff as a leader, defining leadership direction, self-awareness, executive team development, maintaining professional ethics within the organization, emotional intelligence and motivation, building trust, community engagement, and developing external partnerships. The participating sheriffs actively engaged in discussions on these subjects.

On Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 12:32pm, Fleming County Dispatch received a 911 call from Michael Jones of 1040 Goddard Covered Bridge Road of a possible burglary in progress. Once units arrived on scene, they attempted to contact Jones who would not answer the door. Deputies looked in the front window and observed Mr. Jones standing in the kitchen behind a bar.

Chief Deputy Conn was able to make contact with Jones by phone and was telling him to come to the door. Jones stated that he could not come to the door. Both Deputies tried to talk to Jones through the window but Jones ignored the Deputies commands to show his hands or to come to the front door.

Chief Deputy Conn returned to his vehicle to try and establish communication with the PA system while Deputy McIntyre continued to try and communicate with Mr. Jones through the front window. Deputy McIntyre observed Mr. Jones arm himself with a shotgun and was in the process of raising it towards the window that Deputy McIntyre was positioned in front of. Deputy McIntyre left the front porch of the residence and took up a tactical position of cover with Chief Deputy Conn at his cruiser.

Chief Deputy Conn continued to try and make contact with Mr. Jones via his PA and telephone. Mr. Jones then fired several shots out the front window of his residence towards the Deputies position.

After numerous attempts to establish contact and directing Mr. Jones to come to the front door unarmed, Mr. Jones came out of the residence and walked towards the Deputies armed with a semi-automatic pistol. Both Deputies gave Jones numerous verbal commands to drop his weapon which after several commands he complied. At which time he retrieved a second semi-automatic pistol from his coat pocket. Deputies again gave him commands to drop the firearm and he complied.

Mr. Jones was then taken into custody without further incident. Mr. Jones was lodged in the Mason County Detention Center and charged with two counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st degree. Chief Deputy Conn and Deputy McIntyre were assisted at the scene by Fleming County Sheriff Sergeant Logan Mullins and Deputy Adam Burns, Flemingsburg Police Chief Brian Bowling, and KSP Post 8 Trooper Tyler Smith, Trooper Nathan Shortridge, and Trooper Mike Armstrong, and Fleming County EMS

Sheriff Tim Smith and All Deputies Successfully Complete Comprehensive Law Enforcement Training

Fleming County, KY – November 14th, 2024 – Sheriff Tim Smith is pleased to announce that all deputies, including court security officers, have successfully completed their required law enforcement training, ensuring their continued preparedness to serve and protect the community of Fleming County.

The comprehensive two-day training program included critical areas such as firearms safety, marksmanship, and defensive tactics. Deputies and court security officers participated in daytime and nighttime shooting qualifications, ensuring they are prepared to handle a variety of real-world scenarios effectively.

“We take the safety of our officers and the public seriously,” said Sheriff Tim Smith. “This training reinforces our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of law enforcement. By ensuring our team is fully qualified in firearms safety and proficiency, both during the day and at night, we are better equipped to respond to any situation that may arise.”

The training took place at our local shooting range, where deputies honed their skills under the supervision of experienced instructors. In addition to firearms proficiency, the deputies also participated in hands-on exercises to improve tactical decision-making, situational awareness, and teamwork.

Sheriff Smith emphasized that these qualifications not only enhance the capabilities of individual deputies but also contribute to the overall safety of the community. “A well-trained team is a safer team. We are proud of the dedication our deputies have shown in completing this critical training,” said Sheriff Smith.

Fleming County Deer Hunt Contest

Kentucky's modern rifle deer season will begin on Saturday November 9th and the Fleming County Sheriff's Office asks all hunters to be careful while afield. Don't take unsafe shots, wear hunter orange, use a treestand safety harness, and please don't mix alcohol/drugs with hunting activities.

We will be hosting a "Favorite Photo" contest and encourage you to share a photo of your successful hunt. Simply send a single photo to us in messenger or email it to flemingcosheriff@gmail.com and at the end of rifle season we will award a gift to the one with the most likes.

Fleming County Sheriff’s Statement Regarding Drug Investigations

The Fleming County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to report the successful completion of two separate drug investigations that resulted in the arrests of Christian Hawkins and Lee Allison for Trafficking in a Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine.

In both cases, Deputy Welch, in conjunction with K9 Rex, conducted thorough investigations that led to the discovery of illegal substances in the possession of the individuals. K9 Rex’s exceptional detection capabilities contributed to the locating of methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia, which indicated the illegal sale and distribution of controlled substances.

These arrests are a direct result of the diligent work and dedication of the deputies and K9 Rex, who are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. The Fleming County Sheriff’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to combat drug-related offenses and protect our citizens.

All parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
